The Docket 2/5-2/9

    Theater

  • Whistler in Dark’s production of One Flea Spare opens this weekend @ the Factory Theatre. Tickets $10-$20.

On the last day of their quarantine, a wealthy couple’s house is invaded by two strangers – a sailor and a girl who might not be what she seems. And so another month of quarantine begins. Watched over by their jailor, these four with nothing in common must find a way to survive both the plague and each other. Alliances and betrayal, bargains and games. This searing and lyrical drama explores the politics of compassion within the shadow of the grave.

  • It’s sold out (no surprise here), but the Exquisite Corps Theatre presents a staged reading of the recent viral phenomenon Two Gentlemen of Lebowski by Adam Bertocci @ the Factory Theatre Monday and Tuesday night @ 7:30. Plays at the Factory Theatre don’t usually sell out, much less readings. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw an outright production in the coming months, provided there’s no legal troubles with Hollywood. I’m looking forward to it Tuesday.
  • Classical Music

  • Sure, you’ve heard all about BLO’s much anticipated The Turn of the Screw (I’ll be catching it Friday), but there are two Britten productions to see! Harvard’s Dunster House Opera Society is putting on Britten’s Albert Herring. Tickets $10-$20, available through the Harvard Box Office. Shows Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night @ 8:30, and next weekend Friday and Saturday at the same time, in the Dunster House Dining Hall. A good option if you’re short on cash or couldn’t get BLO tickets.
  • And if that isn’t enough opera, there’s the Teatro Lirico D’Europa production of The Barber of Seville @ the Cutler Majestic Friday and Saturday night. Tickets: $30, $50, $70, $85.
  • Roger Tapping, former violist of the Takács Quartet turned NEC teach, gives a free b-day recital in Jordan Hall, Sunday @ 8:00.
  • Also coming up at NEC, John Page conducts the NEC Symphony Orchestra Monday @ 8:00, Jordan. Program includes Franck, Ravel, and Schuller. These concerts are always free, very popular, and a great way to hear a symphony that’s not the BSO.
  • One final free concert of note. The great diva Renée Fleming, performing Strauss’ Four Last Songs with the BSO next weekend, will give a master class at Harvard Tuesday @ 3:00 (Paine Hall, 1 Oxford Street, Music Building). The class is free and open to the public.
  • Visual Arts

  • The New England Art Awards go down Monday @ 7:00 @ The Burren in Davis Square. The awards will feature a local brass band, admission is free, and “creative attire is suggested.” Many thanks to the The New England Journal of Aesthetic Research.
  • Movies

  • The Harvard Film Archive kicks off its John Ford retropspective Saturday night @ 7:00 with The Searchers, followed by Directed by John Ford, a documentary by Peter Bogdanovich.
